That Man of Mine

You know, couples probably don't always think ahead about those "thin" times when taking marriage vows. I am sure neither Tommy nor I did 48 years ago when we said "I do."

I asked him about that today. You know, the "would you do it again" ... knowing what you now know about those thin times...like this one.

He has been the very best support for me EVER during this ordeal. He's up early at his "luxury" hotel, The Atlantic. Usually he walks through "interesting" parts of Walvis Bay to reach the hospital, often stopping at an ATM to withdraw a few more thousand dollars (Namibian dollars, that is) to pay our myriad of bills.

He's negotiated taxis, insurance companies, wheelchairs in airports, phone lines, text messages, and emails that don't get through. He's walked me to the loo, bathed me, helped me brush my teeth, and continuously rubbed my back (and backside.) He's consulted with Dr. Muller over follow-up procedures, medications, etc. ("Can she drink on the plane AND take all those pain killers???").

It's been a full-time job that has prevented him from being able to take advantage of several kind invitations to see the tour sites here.

And today, he had a couple of would-be muggers follow him on the street asking for money. They wouldn't stop until he said he was walking to the police department.  He actually did know he wasn't far from it...biggest building in town.

So, I guess he did really mean Thick OR Thin, even if he wasn't anticipating this!

God bless him. I would be curled up in a fetal position without his constancy through this horrid mess I made of our holiday. I love you, TD.

  2. What a beautiful post. Yes, couples often learn the hard way what their marriage vows really mean. I too never imagined experiencing “through sickness and health.” You really do learn how much you love your spouse when health emergencies arise. Tommy is a great man and you both know how lucky you are to have each other. Travel safe. See you in Charleston January. Love you guys, Susan
